The palace was once the City Hall, and housed the Offices of the Magistrate’s Court. During Venetian rule, the palace became also the seat of the civil and penal courts, the prison, the College of Notary Publics, and many other functions. It even has its own chapel. In 1447 the Stairway of the Accounting Building was built inside the courtyard, and became one of the first structures added to the palace courtyard.
